The total fish landed in Oman during 2016 stood at 279,610 tonnes, 8.7 per cent higher than the 257,172 tonnes in 2015, according to the latest data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

NCSI also informed that the fish exported in 2016 increased by 20.4 per cent in value, to OMR 58.82 million (USD 152.5 million) [OMR 48.87 millones (USD 126.7 million) in 2015], while the exported volume grew by 3 tonnes (2.7 per cent) to 114 tonnes, Muscat Daily reported.

The fish landed by the traditional fishing sector reached 277,014 tonnes from 254,767 tonnes in 2015.

Meanwhile, the fish landed through commercial fishing declined by 22.4 per cent, to 163 tonnes.

Fish landings through coastal fishing increased to 2,330 tonnes in 2016 from 2,024 tonnes in 2015 while aquaculture contributed 103 tonnes to the total fish landings in 2016, a drop by 39.4 per cent if compared to 170 tonnes in 2015.

In 2016, the total number of renewed fishing licences increased by 88 per cent, to 7,545 compared to 4,020 in 2015. The number of new licences issued in 2016 was 1,320 while 1,337 new licences were issued in 2015.
