Fishing sector reports indicate that the shrimp fishing season has been good this year, and it is likely that this crustacean landings exceed 2015 records, considering that there are still several weeks of activity.

According to the latest statistics released by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries of the Nation, until last October 24 a total of 136,776 tonnes was landed compared with 143,127 tonnes throughout 2015 and 127,249 tonnes in 2014.

It must be recalled that the Federal Fisheries Council last week set the closure of the shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) season in waters under national jurisdiction, and the suspension of shipments to fishing since Friday October 28. But the fleet will be allowed to continue to fish in the area until November 7.

Most catches, 83,276 tonnes, were landed by the shrimp fishing fleet. Secondly, the coastal fleet was located, with 31,932 tonnes, followed by fresh fish vessels, with 20,691 tonnes and bay/estuary, with 876.9 tonnes.

It is important to highlight that 2016 is the fourth consecutive year that shrimp catches exceed 100,000 tonnes.

Shrimp exports accounted for more than half of the revenue generated by the sector in the first eight months of this year.

Out of a total of 297,463 tonnes of fishery products exported up to August 31 for USD 1,098 million, shrimp sales reached 96,853 tonnes, for USD 597 million. These figures represent an increase of 47 per cent in volume and 41.8 per cent in value because the average price fell 3.6 per cent.
