Brussels - The European Council agreed on the general permissible rates for catching fish and set quotas for the ten most important fish stocks in the Baltic Sea.

"The ministers decided to reduce the herring of Riga by 7%, salmon by 5%, eastern cod by 8% of borage herring by 40%, western herring by 39% and flounder by 10%. Such a decision was made based on the scientific recommendations of ICES," the European Council reported.

Meanwhile, the catch of central herring and sprat increased by 20% and 1% respectively. According to the Minister of Environment of Estonia Siim Kiisler, these changes correspond to economic and environmental sustainability.
