It might not have happened in this province, but the Atlantic Salmon Federation says it’s a cause for concern on the island.

The federation announced recently that for the first time since it’s been monitoring the Magaguadavic River in New Brunswick, zero wild Atlantic salmon have returned from the sea.

Neville Crabbe, who is with the federation, says that’s not a complete surprise but he calls it heartbreaking and disappointing. He says it points to a larger issue with farmed salmon and aquaculture. He says there is a well recognized concern on the south coast of Newfoundland. The numbers are dropping to the point where experts now identify the population as being threatened.
