The Senate Finance Committee approved the continuity of the bill that creates the National Institute for Sustainable Development of Artisanal Fisheries and Small Scale Aquaculture (INDESPA), which will be put to the vote soon.

The undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Pablo Berazaluce, who was present at the meeting that reviewed the project, said: "We are very pleased that this bill continues to advance in Congress. INDESPA represents a qualitative leap for the artisanal fishing sector in Chile, incorporating, within its lines, regional offices, budget increase, direct technical assistance and training, adding of course the variable of sustainability.”

In this context, the authority noted: "The Government of President Bachelet has always sought to promote economic development hand in hand with environmental care and sustainability. Therefore, the support for artisanal fisheries and small-scale aquaculture should always be generated taking care of the state of the hydrobiological resources so that we can ensure the future of the activity."

INDESPA will be an institution with national coverage that, through regional offices, will contribute to improving the productive and/or commercial capacity of small-scale artisanal and aquaculture sectors, providing support to these sectors in cases of catastrophe and promoting, in turn, infrastructure development works in order to encourage and promote the productive development of its beneficiaries.
