With the Pescanova Biomarine Centre, which is about to begin its construction phase, Nueva Pescanova Group wants to be a reference in R&D in aquaculture worldwide and a driving force in the whole sector.

"In Grupo Nueva Pescanova, we are committed to aquaculture to ensure the sustainability of marine resources," said Juan de la Cerda and López-Vaspino, corporate director of R&D, Quality and Sustainability of the Group, at the XX ForoAcui.  Thus his intervention began to introduce the link between R&D and aquaculture within the Spanish multinational firm, which will soon be reflected in what will be the first technology centre of private aquaculture in Spain and probably of the three most important ones in Europe: Pescanova Biomarine Centre.

Pescanova Biomarine Centre will be built on the 400 m2 plant that Insuíña has in O Grove -- since July it has been empty waiting for construction work to begin -- and, today, an administrative procedure is pending: the works license, according to the director of the Group.

The company expects to start construction soon, with a planned duration of one year, so the launch would be in 2018.

The first private technology centre in aquaculture in Spain, "which will position Galicia at the forefront of global R&D in aquaculture," will count on the integration of technological, industrial, social and governmental collaborators and 50 people from the marine research sector will work there.

The four pillars on which this project is based, explained the corporate director of R&D, Quality and Sustainability of the Group, are the improvement of current species (turbot, shrimp and tilapia) farming, and to do so through processes that have to do with genetics, nutrition, management and health; research on new species, ensuring the future of the company and all of this in a framework of sustainability "based on the tools of the environment: industry 4.0 (robotics, artificial intelligence, big data, etc.) and the environment, working on efficiency, energy savings or competitive improvements."

With regard to priority R&D&I lines, Juan de la Cerda highlighted the development of genetic selection programs (focusing on growth rates, conversion rates and disease resistance); the development of new farming systems linked to a reduction in operational costs; the use of new technology (vaccinators, classifiers, artificial vision, samplers, ...); new procedures for the control and diagnosis of pathologies (vaccines, methods of diagnosis by PCR, probiotics, ...), the development of new presentations/new markets; environment, waste and effluent recovery, and animal welfare. And all this with the consumer in focus.

But Grupo Nueva Pescanova not only wants to be a reference in R&D in aquaculture and a driving force of the whole sector, but the release has been one of the goals. In this sense, the vocation to collaborate with all European research centres and other stakeholders started as well as that with society to raise awareness of the benefits aquaculture has. "It will be an open door centre", emphasized Juan de la Cerda in the XX ForoAcui.

To carry out all these functions, a unique center has been designed integrated in the environment and the only one available in Galicia on a pre-industrial scale. Its facilities will be structured in different areas, including auxiliary and larvae farming, breeding and reproduction of turbot and also new species, turbot fattening, vannamei shrimp farming, a recirculation zone or another one dedicated to laboratories. It will have a processing room, offices, live cooking, plus a reception area and dressing rooms, and machinery workshop. There will also be an exhibition hall and an auditorium.

The XX ForoAcui will meet on October 10 and 11 at the Eurostars Isla de La Toja Hotel (O Grove, Pontevedra), to the researcher, business, administrations and students linked to the fishing and aquaculture sector to analyze, discuss and reflect on the marine resources and aquaculture as well as contributing to the transfer of knowledge.
