Peruvian fishery production rose 37.9 per cent in the first quarter of this year, the highest growth in all the economic sectors in the country and the only one that reaches double digits, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

This indicates that the fishing sector continues in a strong recovery, despite the climatic phenomena that affected the coastal zones of the country during the first months of the year.

According to the INEI, in the last March fishing increased by 37.29 per cent for the tenth consecutive month due to the expansion of maritime fishing that grew 41.87 per cent, and contributed 37.55 percentage points to the result of the sector.

The capture of species for direct human consumption was greater in 25.42 per cent, with a significant advance in the frozen line, which increased by 112.63 per cent.

Meanwhile, the landing of species for indirect human consumption (anchovy) grew 100 per cent, reaching 59,737 tonnes in March, mainly in the southern part of the country. Between January and March, the increase reached 166 per cent.

The fishing activity also contributed to the growth of the non-primary manufacture, which in the first quarter of 2017 increased 12.15 per cent. This boost is based on the production of canned fish, which only increased by 205 per cent in March due to the greater fishmeal processing.

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), Bruno Giuffra, reported that anchovy catch has already reached 34 per cent of the quota allocated for the first fishing season in the northern central area, which is 2.8 million of tonnes.

The minister believes that 2017 will be a good year for fishing because in the coming months there will be a favourable performance of the sector due to the normalization of weather conditions, and due to the measures issued for artisanal and industrial fishing, which are enabling the development of this productive activity.
