The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) and the Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) have signed a collaboration agreement according to which both institutions will be able to define specific procedures, criteria, methodologies and control techniques.

The signed protocol, which is part of the National Environmental Control Network (RENFA), was signed by the Superintendent of the Environment, Cristian Franz, and SERNAPESCA national director, Jose Miguel Burgos.

This protocol establishes the way in which SERNAPESCA will collaborate with the environmental control according to the model established in the Organic Law of the Superintendence of the Environment (LOSMA) and defines a procedure for the management of complaints. In addition, coordination activities between the two agencies are defined in risk situations to biodiversity and/or natural resources generated by activities that are subject to the powers of the SMA; explains how SERNAPESCA will collaborate in the sanctioning procedures initiated by the SMA and lists how both institutions will share information and participate in training sessions.

It also deals with the loan of technological equipment from the SMA to SERNAPESCA. A successful case has been the use of the Submarine Robot (ROV), which has been used to control salmon farming centres in the southern part of the country.

"For us the settlement of this agreement is really relevant because it is the result of the work that we have been doing for three years with SERNAPESCA. We have managed to establish a working method that has been very beneficial for both institutions," said Superintendent Franz.

He added that the agreement "will allow to generate a very fine and very close coordination when planning the inspections".

"In addition, SERNAPESCA will be able to execute its own activities and then report the results to the SMA because they already have a methodology and a way of doing things validated by us," he said.

Director Burgos stated that "this is how institutions modernize, collaborate and can optimize the resources of all Chileans in pursuit of a common goal."
