The National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (AUNAP) presented the progress made in the projects under agreement with Kristoph Van Houten Romer Foundation to contribute to the development of marine and continental aquaculture in Colombia, to meet the needs of the sector, and generate knowledge to establish the effectiveness of new technology.

The meeting, held in Repelon Aquaculture Station, was attended by officials from the AUNAP, researchers and communities of artisanal fishermen and fish farmers.

AUNAP director general, Otto Polanco Rengifo, stressed that the objective of these projects is to provide sustainable alternatives to those who live on aquaculture.

"These researches are not only supported by a scientific component but are in line with the reality of our communities and the sector," he said.

At the meeting twelve research projects developed on marine and continental aquaculture, especially on native species such as snapper, tilapia, bocachico, freshwater artemia, cyanobacteria and escalar altum, as well as domesticated species such as red tilapia, were shared.

According to Sergio Gomez, director of the Office of Knowledge and Information Generation (OGCI), it is intended to promote aquaculture at domestic level and increase fish in the country, delivering inputs to people engaged in aquaculture. "We will seek to replicate these successful experiences to all regions of the country," he said.

The effectiveness of the appropriation of new biofloc production technology in fresh and salubrious water, aquapony, ornamental, tilapia and bocachico genetics, snapper fattening, production of live feed, grouper reproduction, cyanobacteria associated with water bodies where aquaculture projects are developed, were some of these research projects.

Marine aquaculture meetings were attended by the international expert advisor on marine fish farming, Luis Sergio Alvarez, of Cuban nationality, a world authority on the subject.

The specialized professional of the OGCI, Gustavo Salazar, explained the importance these projects have, especially in what has to do with conservation, avoiding mortality in the species such as that occurred in Lago del Cisne months ago.

"Cyanobacteria are algae that grow under eutrophication conditions of the water, if they are toxic they generate toxins that affect the health of the fish and the health of the human being. That is why, the research seeks to characterize them, identify them and establish its level of affectation," he stressed.

In addition, with the participation of the community, a debate was held regarding the feasibility of setting up projects with biofloc and aquaponics systems in Colombia, an initiative that was enriched by their contributions.

There was also a space for the presentation of the research projects developed since 2013 by AUNA, with the guidelines defined within the OGCI and the strategies used for its implementation, which included the performance of strategic alliances with different entities of the sector, among them, Fedeacua, Universidad de la Costa Corporation, Universidad del Pacífico, Hydrosphere and Surcolombian University.
