Lobster fishermen operating in the northern Pacific zone of Baja California Sur are having the most abundant lobster catch season so far. They estimate that at the harvest closure more than 2,200 tonnes will be achieved, compared to the 1,200 tonnes reported in previous years.

As the fishing leader Jesús Camacho explained to El Sucaliforniano, it is an unprecedented phenomenon, associated with the normalization of temperatures in the sea, which has favored the crustacean´s reproduction.

He also said that the lobster price has remained stable thanks to the agreement reached between the organizations to sell at the same price.

In 2016, the Baja California Sur lobster season ended with the capture of more than 1,790 tonnes of red lobster (Panulirus interruptus), mostly exported to the Asian market.

Baja California Sur, in the northwest of Mexico, is the state with the country´s most kilometers of coast, which has allowed it to become the main export region of red lobster from Mexico to the rest of the world.
