The Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAP), through the Undersecretary of Fisheries Resources (SRP), announces that, since January 15, the closed fishing season for mouthless crab (Cardisona crassum) has been in effect throughout the country, to protect the resource during its reproduction cycle.

During the closure, which will be in force until February 15, the capture, possession, processing, transportation and internal and external commercialization of these crabs is prohibited.

The director of Control of Fisheries Resources (DCRP), Jorge Villavicencio, stressed that the measure's purpose is to preserve the biological activities of the crustaceans' pre courtship and copulation, which takes place exclusively outside the burrows.

Fishing inspectors distributed nationwide will perform control operations in mangroves, restaurants, markets, land terminals, airports, and other collection centers that are dedicated to commercialize this species.

Citizens who do not comply with the ban will be sanctioned according to the Fishing and Fisheries Development Law or posts ordered by the Office of the Prosecutor
