The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) reported that a ban on fresh Southern hake (Merluccius australis) trade has already begun.

Although the fishing ban began on August 1, SERNAPESCA had granted a margin of tolerance for the arrival of and unloading vessels that were fishing in remote areas. The final deadline for trading the product in fresh condition was met on Saturday.

"In consideration of the vessels that were fishing in remote places, the landing was allowed until 12:00 pm on Wednesday, August 2, and the Southern hake as a fresh product could be traded until Saturday August 5," explained SERNAPESCA Regional Director of Los Lagos, Eduardo Aguilera.

"Consequently, since Sunday, August 6, transportation, marketing and possession of the resource in a fresh state has been totally prohibited," he said.

In addition to the enforcement actions to ensure compliance with this administration measure, SERNAPESCA started "Paremos el Merluzeo" (Let’s stop catching hake) campaign. This initiative seeks to raise awareness among consumers to avoid buying the resource during the closure, and thus discourage capture, transportation and illegal marketing of the Southern hake during its spawning season, which covers the entire month of August.

Aguilera explained that the closure is done at this time to protect the species stock so that it has time to spawn and reproduce. In this way, new specimens can be integrated into the population in the coming years, thus safeguarding a resource of great relevance in the area, especially for artisanal fishing.

SERNAPESCA regional director recalled that last year "very good behaviour" from fishermen and traders was observed, and expressed his hope that this year the result will be the same.
