CHINA'S quality watchdog will enhance checks on products from Vietnam to ensure a virus isn't "imported" from the cholera-hit country.

Stricter checks will be conducted on inbound people, vehicles, goods, containers, luggage and mails from Vietnam as the country is suffering from an outbreak of acute diarrhea as a result of cholera, the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said yesterday.

Tainted products will be disinfected, the administration said.

Anyone from Vietnam showing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea should report to China's entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities and will receive medical treatment, the administration said. .

The administration also reminded people who are heading to Vietnam not to eat risky food, such as uncooked vegetables and seafood.

More than 1,000 people have been hospitalized with diarrhea in Vietnam.
