RESEARCHERS at the Shanghai Fisheries University have begun using squid skins in the manufacture of collagen for cosmetic products.

It is the first time the seafood products have been used in collagen extraction in China, university officials said yesterday.

As a common seafood, squid and its processed products, are popular dishes on Chinese dinner tables.

The university process uses left-over inedible squid waste such as squid heads, skin and viscera.

"Most seafood processing factories just dump the inedible parts, or bury them, which is a waste of resources and even causes pollution," said Gu Jie, a student at the university's food college and the program's coordinator.

"In fact those waste squids parts are a source of valuable cosmetic materials, especially collagen," he said.

Collagen is the main protein in the connective tissues of animals and the most abundant protein in mammals, comprising 25 percent of the total protein content in most creatures. It is widely used in medicine, plastic surgery and cosmetics.

A study conducted by the student researchers suggested that more than 76 percent of waste squid skins was made up of crude protein and half of this is collagen.

The project was nominated as one of the elite programs at the university.
