BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhuanet) -- With a swim bladder said to be more than worth its weight in gold, this extremely rare 34-kilogram Chinese bahaba was sold for 1.48 million yuan ($216,700) to a merchant in Cangnan, Zhejiang Province on June 7.
The fortunate fisherman surnamed Chen said his boat was heading home after half a month of fishing on June 6 when he told his companions, "Let's cast another net. We will be home soon." When net was pulled up Chen was stunned at the sight of the large bahaba.
Ecstatically, he shouted to his crew, "We've got a big prize! Come see - a Chinese bahaba!" The delighted fishermen used ice to cover the 1.2-meter fish. The Chinese bahaba is threatened by massive over-fishing and has been listed as endangered and/or commercially extinct.
