ATHENS, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Greece not only has problems, but also successes, and the country plays an important role internationally in such sectors as shipping and fisheries, the EU' s Greek Commissioner on Shipping and Fisheries Maria Damanaki said on Thursday during a visit in Athens.

"The growth Greece needs today could come from the sea. I am here to help. The EU makes suggestions to support Greece and show solidarity," Damanaki told the press after her meetings with Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister George Papandreou on developments regarding shipping and fisheries. They also discussed the severe economic crisis that has hit Greece.

Expressing the stance of Brussels, the Greek Commissioner stressed that the EU will do whatever necessary to support the Greek government in development efforts and the creation of new jobs in the sectors of shipping and fisheries, where Greece has an advantage.
