SHANGHAI'S Putuo District today began to relocate stores in Tongchuan Seafood Market, the city's largest, to other districts as it renovates the place into a commercial and cultural center, a government official of the district said today.
The stores in the seafood market will be separated and moved to five food markets including Dongfang International Seafood Center in Yangpu District, the under-construction Xijiao International Agricultural Center and Yangtze Delta Region Agricultural Center in Qingpu District, as well as Jiangyang Agricultural Market in Baoshan District, Liu Jingzhong, a senior officer of the district, told a press conference this morning.
The district government will give store owners three months to decide which market they would like to move into, Liu said.
The Tongchuan Seafood Market was formed in the 1980s by some farmers in Putuo. The market gradually developed into the largest and most famous seafood market in the city.
The district government has also begun to transfer another four fruit and agricultural markets along Tongchuan Road and Caoyang Road with the seafood market, Liu added.
The second batch of seven fruit and agricultural wholesale markets in that area will begin to move later this year.
The government planned to renovate the area into a multi-functional complex that includes services such as trading, logistics, exhibiting and tourism in the complex, Liu said.
These markets have become famous, but they have also disturbed the environment and traffic in the area, said Liu, adding many residents suggested the markets be relocated.
The city government has planned to build four urban centers in Xujiahui, Yangpu District's Jiangwan area, Pudong's Huamu area and Zhenru area. | |
