CRAYFISH have quietly crawled into city markets again but they are costing about 10 percent more than last year. Experts say the price will drop as the supply peaks after April.

In the Tongchuan Road Aquatic Products Wholesale Market, one of the city's largest fish markets, crayfish was costing wholesale between 14 yuan (US$1.97) and 24 yuan per kilogram, more than 10 percent above last year's price.

The amount of crayfish supplied to the market is about six tons a day and mainly comes from Hubei, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces.

The price of crayfish from Xuyi, Jiangsu Province, which are regarded as the tastiest, will also rise by about 15 percent to about 55 yuan a kilogram, according to the Xuyi Crayfish Association.

Zhao Jianmin, the association's secretary general, said prices are expected to drop when large numbers of the delicacy become available from May to August.
