With the aquatic farming areas at 10.37 million mu (1 mu=1/6 acre), the overall output of Hubei aquatic products has amounted to 3.5 million tons in 2007, continuously standing as the top producer in freshwater sector of China aquaculture industry for 13 years.

As the leading freshwater species in export market, crayfish and China Channel Catfish are the most favorable contributors for the foreign exchange earnings of Hubei province, among which crayfish takes the biggest account with the export volume at 32,300 tons valued for 159 million US$ in this year.
