ALLERGY warnings will have to be displayed on domestically made foods by the end of this year, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The new rules are expected to be enforced nationwide. This is the first time that China has spelled out regulations on food allergy warnings, according to local quality supervision authorities.
For example, if a food contains royal jelly, the label must say: "This product contains royal jelly, which can possibly cause allergy and may be especially fatal to asthma patients." The size of the warning must be no less than three millimeters high, explained the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.
"Although only a small number of people have allergies, many developed countries regulate that allergenic sources should be marked on packages or labels," said Sun Yeyao, an official with the bureau.
"Eggs, dairy, seafood and nuts can all trigger allergic reactions," he added. "They can cause skin allergies, vomiting, stomach aches or asthma, while some may even be fatal." Current rules require only the product's name, ingredients, producer's name, production date, expiry date and storage methods.
