Taiwan: sales of whale sharks prohibited

A ban on sales of whale shark, which is otherwise known as Tofu shark, has been put into force in Taiwan since 27 June 2007. The whale shark sales ban is enforced to comply with an international convention. Meanwhile, traders are given a three-month period to sell all whale shark catches, according to the Council of Agriculture of Taiwan.

The council earlier announced a ban on whale shark fishing on 27 March 2007, after the nation's whale shark quota of 30 set for the year of 2007 was reached.
