The first "Island Economic Forum" opened on August 16 in Yantai, Shandong. More than 60 Chinese and foreign experts, scholars and businessmen discussed sustainable development issues and future economic trends in China’s islands. Shandong’s new models of island protection and development caused widespread concern among experts.

Shandong Province is rich in fishery. It has a coastline of 3,345 km and a total of 456 islands, which are rich in resources and potential for development.

In the development of island economies, Shandong officials stress the principle of "protection first, moderate development." Representatives of Shandong focus on ecological construction and protection of the island and developing island industries like aquaculture and tourism. Island economy has a strong connection to Shandong’s ocean economy.

"Shandong Peninsula Ocean Economic Zone Development Plan" clearly put forward the building of an international leisure vacation island similar to Long Island. Experts believe that the construction of Long Island provides a very valuable experience for our island economic development model.
