Marine research booms

Thecoastal city of Qingdao has spared no efforts in turning itself into a frontier for marine scientific research.

There are 28 marine science research and education institutes in the city, as well as more than 5,000 marine science professionals, of whom 1,704 are senior professionals, 281 doctorate supervisors and 17 academicians.

The city has over 20 marine science research vessels, of which seven are kiloton ocean research vessels.

Staff with the city’s national marine science laboratories undertook 46 percent of all national marine science research projects over the past five years.

Marine research covers over 50 disciplines including physical oceanography, geology, biology, chemistry, medicine, fisheries, engineering, economics, management and marine culture.

Qingdao has performed a great deal of basic and applied research in marine biology, marine chemistry and marine geology.

The city has made numerous achievements in the exploration of offshore oil and natural gas and deep sea mine resources.

Its research into the exploration of marine biological resources, physical oceanography and ocean corrosion and prevention have made the city a national pioneer.
