NANJING: The United States was the largest buyer of seafood from east China's Jiangsu province in January with $10.44 million in purchases, more than a quarter of the province's total seafood exports.

Exports of fish, seaweed, clams, crabs and lobsters to the United States grew 65.6 percent on a year-on-year basis in January, the provincial oceanic and fisheries bureau said in a press release Wednesday.

Jiangsu exported 8,500 tonnes of seafood worth $38.14 million last month, the statement said.

The Republic of Korea was the second largest buyer with $6.77 million of purchases in January, followed by the European Union with 6.25 million of purchases.

Japan, which was the largest buyer in January 2009, ranked fourth with $5.29 million of imports, down 12.9 percent year-on-year.

As of the end of January, Jiangsu seafood had been sold to 59 countries and regions worldwide, compared with 33 in January 2009, the bureau said.
