FAO conference about safety in fish-farming

Jun 11,2007
Safety and quality in fish-farming were amongst the main issues of discussion at the FAO aquaculture trade conference held in Qindao, China, from 29 to 31 May 2007. According to FAO's experts, fish farming is the most rapidly growing food production sector, and 44% of the fish on sale is farmed, compared to 9% in 1980. The need for a responsible aquaculture and sure safety standards worldwide was recently highlighted by some health scares due to unlawful substances found in farmed fish, including toxin melamine found in feed used by some US fish farms. The US recently banned catfish imports from oversea after finding some blacklisted antibiotics in the fish.
