The European Union (EU) is ready to set up regular exchange mechanism with the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, and beef up bilateral cooperation with China in fighting against illegal fishery.

Visiting European Union (EU) Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Joe Borg made the remarks at a press briefing here Friday.

Invited by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, Borg is here on a five-day China trip. He had discussions with several key Chinese officials including Minister of Agriculture Sun Zhengcai, Director of the State Oceanic Administration Sun Zhihui and Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui.

Borg said the talks were very "satisfactory," and both sides agreed to take effective measures to fight against illegal fishery in a bid to promote sustainable development of the fishery industry.

The EU also expected to enhance the dialogue mechanism with China on international fishery management, and set up cooperation mechanism with the country on maritime policies to deal with maritime activities, he added.
