China hopes fishermen's safety ensured in ROK's tougher fisheries crackdown

By: Xinhua News Agency

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said Wednesday that China hopes the Republic of Korea (ROK) guarantees the safety and legitimate interests of Chinese fishermen in the process of law enforcement.

Hong made the remarks at a daily briefing when asked to comment on reports of the ROK's tougher measures aimed at eliminating violations of bilateral fishing agreement by Chinese fishing boats, including reinforced coast guards and allowing tipstaff to use guns and other weapons.

The Chinese government has consistently required fishermen to fish domestically and legally, according to relevant domestic rules. Chinese authorities have done much and will continue to enhance the regulation and education of fishermen, said Hong.
