The total number of China's fishing boats stands at nearly 1.1 million, accounting for about a quarter of world’s total and ranking first worldwide, according to Liu Zheng, the director-general of the Registry of Fishing Vessels under the Ministry of Agriculture of China.

However, China's fishery model is under-developed and the number of China's old and dilapidated fishing boats also ranks first in the world.
