THOUSANDS of fishermen working at the mouth of the Yangtze River are now protected by a marine rescue center that opened on Chongming Island yesterday.
The new rescue center is a sub-branch of Shanghai Marine Rescue Center and will respond to emergency calls from ships around the 3,366 square kilometers of water surrounding Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands.
The three islands, which constitute Chongming County, are located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, where it pours into the East China Sea.
The islands are home to many local shipyards and a focus of developing marine traffic, shipping and economic development.
A reservoir to supply drinking water to two million people is also being built.
"Chongming County marine rescuers will no longer need to first report to the rescue headquarters when they receive distress calls. They can call on help from more than 40 government departments, including fishing authorities and frontier inspection police in the county to support rescues," said Zhu Ganghao, a director with Shanghai Marine Rescue Center.
More than 7,000 fishermen work in the waters around the islands with about 600 small boats.
