A major, national aquatic food base is planned to be built in Dongying, Shandong Province, which entails the construction of a 400,000-mu marine fishery industrial zone and more than 10 million yuan ($1.53 million) in investment.

The project will improve the fishery's infrastructure development and construct a fishery security system. As part of the 2011 overhaul, sea and fresh water breeding areas will be raised to 1,850,000 mu, the output of aquatic products raised to 480,000 tons, and the output value of the fishery elevated to 9.8 billion yuan ($1.5 billion).

The marine fishery industrial zone will employ a highly efficient ecological breeding mode, which will enable the breeding of precious marine organisms such as holothurians.

In addition, the development of the Yellow-River-estuary crab industry is at the core of the process. The crab breeding base will be expanded and corresponding research and product processing advanced. A series of activities and trade fairs will be held to popularize marine product brands, such as the 4th Yellow-River-estuary Crab Gourmet Festival in Dongying.
