The province's offshore area is more than 170,000 square km, larger than it's land area. It is dotted with 299 islands, with a total coastline of 668.6km.
The area is rich in marine resources. Its offshore area makes up 37% of the total surface area of the Bohai and Yellow seas, with a shoal area accounting for 15% of the nation's total. There are about 260 species of fish and prawn in its seas, including more than 40 major cash species of fish and 100 species of shellfish. Shandong leads the country in the production of prawns, shellfishes, abalones, sea slugs and urchins. In its 266,000 ha of freshwaters, there are more than 40 species of freshwater plants and more than 70 species of fish. And the province's prawns, scallops, abalone, sea cucumber and sea urchins are particularly famous in and outside China.
Now the fisheries industry in Shandong faced new challenges in 2010, to promote sustainable development of the fisheries industry, a modern fishing base is now under construction in Dongying. With a total area of 20,000 hectares, it is expected to be the largest aquatic farm in Shandong province.
On the other hand, in accordance with the actual conditions of marine fisheries resources, China has actively readjusted the structure of this sector, made efforts to conserve and rationally utilize off-shore fisheries resources, and actively exploited new resources and fishing grounds, so as to make the fisheries industry constantly adapt to the changes in the structure of marine resources. Acoording to the report of the China's national economic and social development plan currently, the output of aquatic products reached 51.2 million tons, up 4.6% in 2009, and 2.2 million tons more than planned.
