Fish feed in Shanghai is free of melamine contamination, authorities confirmed yesterday after conducting citywide checks over the past two weeks.
The tests, prompted by a widening scandal that found the industrial chemical in products ranging from infant formula to candy, covered more than 100 feed producers across the city. They were carried out by the Shanghai Animal Drugs and Feed Inspection Institution.
As the fish feed was determined safe, inspections will not be conducted on seafood, authorities under the city's Livestock Office said.
The confirmation came just two days after Hong Kong food regulators found the toxic chemical for the first time in samples of feed used at a fish farm on Lantau Island. The feed was produced by a factory in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
Shanghai began the checks near the end of last month after dangerous levels of the chemical were found in eggs and milk powder.
The tests were the second on fish food after the Ministry of Agriculture issued a notice in July 2007 that banned the chemical, which can cause kidney stones and life-threatening renal failure, as an animal-feed additive. Four brands of melamine-tainted eggs were discovered last month in Hong Kong and Hangzhou.
Authorities believe the melamine was added to feed given to chickens that laid the contaminated eggs.
Previous Chinese media reports cited industry insiders as saying that the chemical, used to make plastics, paint and adhesives, has been used in the feed industry for years to mimic protein and cheat testing.
