According to Fisheries Research Institute of Xiamen, there are over 600,000 pieces of Branchiotoma belcheri which has been called “Living Fossil”, first time succeeding to be artificial cultured in Xiamen. This large-scale culturing remarkably extricated Branchiotoma belcheri from the crisis of extinction it is facing.
Based on the statement from the institution, all the fries are from experimental parental propagation rather than wildly fishing and they have been identified to be favorable both in the output of unit water and survival rate, which presents a prospect on big-scale culturing in the future.
At this moment, the further efforts on technology are in the process aiming for a lower cost on this culturing so that it can be fully developed for application in the coming years on the culturing of Branchiotoma belcheri.
Branchiotoma belcheri, with the history of 500 million years till now, in the name of “Living fossil” has been identified as the endangered species in the world. As the only remaining cephalochordate, Branchiotoma belcheri is highly valued either for its edibility or in research programs. |
